Tooth Extractions in Cheshire CT

older couple smiling outside | extractions cheshire ctWe know that extractions aren’t fun and that nobody looks forward to this type of procedure. Extractions are often a “last resort” sort of treatment – the only option left when nothing can be done to save a tooth. This often leads to conflicting emotions and fears about extractions.

At Cheshire Dental Associates, we understand your concerns and we respect them. We’re here to help you get the care you need, and we’ll be there with you every step of the way. We’ll take extra care to make sure that your extraction is painless and free from stress.

Benefits of Tooth Extractions

While no one looks forward to getting a tooth removed, sometimes a tooth extraction is the best way to protect your oral health and overall well-being. Beyond just addressing the immediate issue, extractions often pave the way for a healthier, more confident smile.

Relieves Pain

A damaged or infected tooth can cause constant discomfort and swelling. Removing the problematic tooth eliminates the pain and helps you live pain-free.

Prevents Damage

Leaving a severely decayed or impacted tooth untreated can lead to infections that spread to surrounding teeth and gums. Extraction stops the problem in its tracks.

Improves Health

For patients with overcrowded teeth, tooth extractions can make room for orthodontic treatments. This also helps create a more functional bite in the long run.

Why Do I Need an Extraction?

Extractions can become necessary for a number of reasons. Some of the main reasons that we remove teeth include:

  • The tooth has extensive decay and cannot be repaired.
  • An injury has severely damaged the tooth below the gumline.
  • A tooth is infected past the point where a root canal can save it.
  • We are prepping for orthodontic treatment and your teeth are overly crowded.
  • You have wisdom teeth that are impacted (partially or completely covered by gum tissue) or are otherwise causing problems.
  • We are preparing your mouth for dentures.

Before we make the decision to remove the problematic tooth or teeth, we will discuss all your options for you and provide you with our honest, professional opinion so that you can make an informed decision.

I'm Still Worried About My Dental Extraction in Cheshire

At Cheshire Dental Associates, we take the time to create a relaxed, comfortable, welcoming atmosphere. We’ll work carefully with you to make sure that all your needs are met and that you are completely numb before we begin your procedure.

If you need some extra help relaxing for your procedure, we also offer sedation with nitrous oxide, often known as “laughing gas.” You simply breathe in the gas using a specially designed mask, and it creates a soothing, calm, and sometimes even euphoric feeling. Nitrous oxide starts working almost instantly, and the effects wear off as soon as we remove the mask, which means you can drive home safely after your procedure (although depending on the type of extraction we are performing, we may recommend bringing a friend or family member with you to help out).

Self-Care Following Your Extraction

We generally recommend that you take the day off for your extraction (and you should take a few days off if we are removing an impacted wisdom tooth). Stock your kitchen with foods that are cool and don’t require much chewing, such as yogurt, smoothies, and soups that can be eaten at room temperature.

Do not drink through a straw or smoke cigarettes while your extraction is healing. The sucking action can dislodge the clot that is forming. This clot is crucial to the healing process, and if it becomes dislodged, you are at risk for developing a painful complication known as dry socket. Smoking impedes healing and can also highly increase your risk of complications.

Cheshire dentists Drs. Marandino and Fletcher will discuss your after care with you in more detail so that you know what to expect following your procedure.
